Designed to provide fire protection for the influx of new loft buildings during the rapid industrialization of SoHo in the late 19th century, 185 Lafayette Street was a functioning firehouse until 1982 when the eventual widening of Lafayette Street brought it to a close. For many years following, the city retained possession of the firehouse as sleeping quarters for Deputy Fire Chief Thomas R. Langford.
