Tips on Finding Unique Properties

The most common question I get in my DMs now is how I find unique properties for sale so I think it’s time I share all the secrets here for everyone to have access to.

First, I almost always use Zillow since their site seems to allow the most freedom with filters. Also, keep in mind, the larger area you search the more results you will have so if you are only willing to live on 5th Avenue and are hoping to score a fire station to live in you‘ll be waiting a lifetime. So, remove the map boundary and zoom out a bit to broaden your options.

Most of us aren’t working with unlimited budgets so set your price range and then (this part is personal preference) uncheck the boxes next to “land” and “manufactured” under Home Type. If you are interested in buying land, go for it! This article is more about finding unique buildings.

Next, click on More (filters) and at the bottom you’ll find a box you can type in called Keywords. Now start thinking of Zillow as a Google for houses. Treat it exactly like you would Google. If you want to find a church, type in the word church. If you want to find a Victorian style home, type in the word Victorian and so on. The keywords will almost always pull places that don’t fit your exact criteria, but it will really narrow it down to a manageable number.

Another good website is Loopnet.com. They are a commercial real estate listing site. Their site is pretty cool because you can click Advanced Search and then literally check off the boxes next to the property types you want to see.

Well, that’s basically all there is to it. Happy hunting on your one-of-kind home!
